About

Edoid Cultural Heritage Enterprise was established in January 2014 for the purpose of acquisition, preservation and promotion of endangered crafts and cultural artefacts of southern Nigeria. Moreover, it has grown to include the documentation of endangered languages in its projects.

The use of the word Edoid brings to memory the matters of languages that have links to Edo of southern Nigeria. According to linguistic classification, the Edoid languages are spoken in the former Bendel state of southern Nigeria. These languages are further classified into sub-groups, namely Delta, North-Central, Northwestern, Northwestern, and Southwestern. There are other differing classification, however, this classification by Elugbe (1989) has become more popular among linguists.

Moreover, the speakers of the Edoid languages also share historical links and other cultural similitude. There are diversities as well similarities in their tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Consequently, the study of one speaker-group may easily lead one to checking the link to other speaker-groups.

Therefore, Edoid Cultural Heritage Enterprise aims to collect, disseminate and archive the endangered tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the several Edoid groups.
